Cape Henlopen State Park
Dogs
Dogs are welcome at Cape Henlopen for seven months of the year and banned from the swimming beaches for the other five. The dates are fixed by state law and they are not flexible, so it is worth knowing them before you load the car.
The two rules that matter

Which means dogs come back to the beach on 1 October. Autumn and winter here are the good months for a dog anyway: the sand is empty, the water is still warm into October, and there is nobody to mind.
Out of season, where exactly
From 1 October to 30 April, leashed dogs may use the unguarded beach. Access is through the designated pedestrian dune crossings at the parking areas — not over the dunes wherever you fancy, which damages the grass that holds the whole cape together. At Gordons Pond the beach access for dogs is limited to the pedestrian crossing at the northern end.
The surf-fishing exception. The seasonal ban applies to swimming and sunbathing beaches. Delaware State Parks states separately that dogs are allowed in all surf-fishing vehicle areas, on a lead no longer than six feet, and that is not limited to the winter months. It does not override a nesting closure or any other temporary restriction, and it does not let you drive onto a swimming beach during summer day-use hours.
Where dogs are never allowed
- Bird nesting areas, including The Point whenever it is closed
- Picnic areas
- Park buildings, including the nature centre and the museum
- Bathhouse boardwalks
- Yurts, and all cabins and cottages except the designated dog-friendly ones
- Sailboarding and surfing beaches
Guide dogs are allowed in all public areas.
There is no off-leash beach here
This one disappoints people, so it is better said plainly. Delaware State Parks runs designated off-leash areas at Wilmington State Parks, Lums Pond and Killens Pond. Cape Henlopen is not one of them. There is no dog beach, no fenced run, and no stretch where the six-foot lead rule is relaxed.
Trails
Leashed dogs are fine on the trails. The park advertises them as pet-friendly and there is no trail-specific ban. The crushed-stone surfaces of Gordons Pond and Junction & Breakwater are easier on paws in August than the loose sand of Pinelands, and there is far more shade on the Pinelands loop when it is hot.
Camping and cabins
Dogs are permitted in the campground, with conditions that are enforced:
- Attended at all times. Never left alone in a vehicle, tent or camper.
- Excessive barking is prohibited, particularly during quiet hours, 10 p.m. to 7 a.m.
- Current rabies vaccination and a valid licence required.
- You clean up after your dog.
For cabins, only Cabin 12 at Cape Henlopen takes dogs. The charge is $25 per dog per night, maximum two dogs. Book early; there is one of it.
